Ingredients for the dosa batter

  1. 1.5 cups idli rice 
  2. 2/3 cups White Urad Dal (Whole)
  3. 1/2 teaspoons Methi Seeds (Fenugreek Seeds)
  4. Water, for soaking 


Directions (for the dosa batter)

  1. Soak the rice in water (it should be immersed in water).
  2. Soak the urad dal and fenugreek in a separate bowl (it should be immersed in water).
  3. Let the rice & dal soak for about 6 hours.
  4. Grind the urad dal into a fine smooth batter using your mixer. Do not add too much water, just add enough to make it into a smooth paste. 


The batter will look fluffy. Transfer the batter to a big bowl (as it will rise), set aside

  1. Grind the rice into a smooth paste, again don’t add too much water, add just enough to make it a smooth paste.
  2. Combine the urad and rice batter, place in a big bowl as it will rise, and leave it out overnight for fermenting. 
  3. The batter will almost double up in volume.

Steps to make Dosa?

  • Heat a cast iron tawa, on high heat, once the tawa is steaming hot, reduce the flame and drop a ladle full of dosa batter and lightly spread it in a circular shape.
  • Once the bubbles begin to start popping on the surface of the dosa, twist the dosa and let it cook from the other side.


If your dog likes something on the side of dosa, you can serve it withbone broth, or make a powder ofChicken Jerky treats and mix it withbone broth, and serve.
